“Born of the sound and culture of the chill-out room.”
The idea for Heads Adrift was inspired by our experiences with the rave scene.
In particular, I fell in love with the post-peak, after-hours hang-out sessions in the chill-out spaces.
I have fond memories of relaxing on the lawn at the Insomniac Festivals such as Beyond Wonderland and Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) and listening to the hypnotic dub of the I & I Ice Cream truck.
I & I Dub Ice Cream Truck at Nocturnal Wonderland
The I & I truck was a 1969 converted ice cream truck that Shakespeare and Aurelito had converted into a mobile sound system.
In the later hours of the festival there would be hundreds of people dancing and laying on the lawn chatting, and giving light shows
I remember thinking how perfectly suited the dub reggae sound was to that particular moment within the Rave. It's a time where everyone is finished raving but they still wanted to vibe out with their friends and share stories from the evening adventure.
It was those experiences with the I & I ice cream truck that led me to learn more about dub and other similar music.
From there I discovered a whole world of down tempo trip-hop artists like Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation and many more.
As a musician I began creating my own down-tempo sounds. I began teaming up with others who were looking to create these magic sounds. The rest is history.
